Minney’s Yacht Surplus is a Southern California institution where boaters can buy, sell and trade boating equipment. It is owned and operated Ernie Minney of Newport Beach. Ernie was raised aboard his father’s 65’ schooner “Kelpie” and after graduating from Cal Maritime Academy in 1959, Ernie sailed aboard Kelpie with his dad and brothers on a years cruise to Tahiti and back. Shortly after returning from Tahiti, Ernie and his dad George started Minney’s Yacht Surplus which in short order became the #1 source of good used boat gear and sails in So. Calif. Ernie in 1977 skippered his lovely 68’ schooner “Shearwater” on a family cruise that ended up being a 40,000 mile circumnavigation. Ernie is an experienced ocean racer and has served as watch captain on many of largest ocean racers on the West Coast. Ernie’s surplus warehouse usually has over 1000 good used sails in stock. Ernie personally measures and appraises every sail that leaves his store. He’s a tough buyer and an easy seller. To this date he has held the line and his highest price sail has never been more that $1500.00. Can you imagine the surprise when the owners of a large ocean racer in Australia unpacked a brand new North $35,000.00 Kevlar-Carbon fiber mainsail from Roy Disney’s monster race boat “Pyewacket” that they paid $1495.00 for!!!! All sails that are purchased from Minney’s may be returned for any reason for a full refund (less shipping) if for any reason you are unhappy with them. The only exception is our “fair and poor condition” sails. These are sails that have merit but might have bad stains, worn leeches, sun cooked leeches and roller furling covers etc. etc. These sails are usually in the $50.00 to $200.00 price range and it is possible to spend more on shipping than the cost of the sail. A sailing club in South America purchased 40 of these sails, a hotel with tree house bungalows in Costa Rica purchased 25 of these sails, recently clothing manufactures have been buying these sails. If you purchase one of these sails and sincerely feel the value wasn’t there, please let Ernie know and he’ll probably send you a full refund and tell you to keep the sail! Please know that all sails are measured a 2^nd time before they are shipped to you and photos can be supplied if you ask for them. The crew at Minney’s motto is “we keep boating affordable” and from the positive imput we receive from our customers in all parts of the world, we think we are doing a pretty good job. WOW!!

Anyone out there looking for a fantastic USED outboard motor??? Just before Christmas we picked up four popular small 4 cycle late model engines, Yamaha’s etc. These are 4 to 6 horsepower with practically no hours on them. Also, we got back a 10 HP 4-stroke Honda long shaft from our local repair shop. We spent $300.00 on it and have the bill attached to the engine. Our local Honda dealer said we should get at least $1400.00 for it be in our keeping in the spirit of “keeping boating affordable” we’ll be quite content if we can get $995.00 for it. Wow! In over 50 years of messing around with boats, I’ve never seen the boating world in such turmoil! A friend recently scrapped his 50 sloop because he couldn’t afford a dock in Newport Beach to tie it up. A mooring service company employee recently showed up at the store with a truckload of spars, winches, and hardware from a half dozen Coronados, Ericsons and Cal sailboats that he scrapped because no one would purchase them. I made him a cash offer and he said he could do better selling the brass, stainless, aluminum etc. by the pound to the scrap metals dealer and he headed off to San Pedro! If anyone out there ever wanted a boat, there will never be a better time than right now. Craig’s List is loaded with them, some are free, just sail them or haul them away. Although I qualify for senior citizen’s discounts, I still do most of the buying and practically all of the pricing at the store. I personally measure, rate and price every sail in our 1,000 bag sail inventory that you can check out at www.minneysyachtsurplus.com . A new Sabot sail is now priced at over $300.00, friends with an Ericson 28 just paid $1,800.00 for a new mainsail and a quote for a new mainsail for Alaska Eagle came in at $12,000.00! Is it any wonder that we are selling 100’s of good used sails every month? While other stores are raising their prices, I insist that my crew hold the line. S.S. fastenings have been $7.00 a lb. for the past 8 years and they still are. We sell sandpaper at cost because we all hate hand sanding and the thought of burning up a buck or buck and a half every few minutes on such a distasteful chore is a total turn-off. We recently lowered the price of paint, varnish, West Epoxy etc. to our cost plus 10%. No one should have to pay $35.00 to $40.00 dollars for a quart of varnish! Boats are my life, just this afternoon I was crawling around the cramped engine room in my Down East 38 sloop running a new bilge suction line. When we say in our ads “we keep boating affordable”, we mean it! We have one store at a fantastic location, and we have free parking. Every day customers tell me they couldn’t own a boat if it wasn’t for my store. Please know we all appreciate your nice comments and thank you for your patronage. Well the docks have finally been ripped up, just last week ... and some new docks are in the process of being installed ... After Don passed away a few years ago, Vikings Port is now owned and operated by his granddaughter ... take a look at the condition of those old docks!!!
